above.studio designed and installed a sculpture for Honam National Institute of Biological Resources with theme of species around Honam region.
↳ Research
The Honam National Institute of Biological Resources, opened in May 2021, is a national research institute that conserves and studies the biodiversity of islands and coastal areas and conducts related projects. The HNIBR provides visitors with information about the various species of living organisms inhabiting the Honam region through exhibitions on biological resources and biodiversity. In this project, the goal was to design a lobby sculpture that can express the diversity of species in the Honam region. Based on the mitochondrial DNA data of about 160 species inhabiting the Honam region, a chandelier object with a double helix structure was designed.
↳ Design
A phylogenetic tree is a diagram that expresses the results of evolution of living thing or the physical and genetic characteristics that appear among different species or taxa, so that you can recognize the diversity of species at a glance. We received request from client to express the diversity of species living in the Honam region with a sculpture, and we wanted to express it as a three-dimensional structure using mitochondrial DNA, which is a base of phylogenetic and reveal the relationship between species by obtaining ideas from the phylogenetic tree.
↳ Development
In order to express the diversity of life species existing in the Honam region, above.studio sampled the species living in the Honam region by using NIBR database. After receiving the mitochondrial DAN data from NCBI in form of graphic data, only RNA-related data suitable for application to the sculpture were sxtracted. Finally, the data was reprocessed to create aesthetically harmonious graphics.
